Visiting Austin - Critique my to-do list and give me advice!
Hello everybody. I'm a North Carolinian that will be visiting Austin (and Texas) for the first time this weekend. I will fly down Saturday morning, and be in town till mid-Tuesday. I'll be exploring the city with a non-American friend that is studying abroad at UT, so I'll be staying in that area. I've been gathering recommendations and doing some research to decide what I like to do. Generally, I want to get a feel for the city, since I am considering applying to a couple jobs here in the future. Also, I love museums, art, food, and breweries. Please let me know what on this list should stay (or go). And what I should add! Restaurants Casino el Camino Micklethwait Home Slice Frank's Gueros Tacos Loro Valentina's Franklin's (probably too ridiculous to attempt?) Salt Lick or Terry Black's Houndstooth Lick Ramen Tatsuya Attractions Zilker Nature Preserve Umlauf Art Museum Texas Capitol (do I need reservation?) Mount Bonnell Blanton Museum of Art Lady Bird Hike South Lamar Bookstore LBJ Library (low on list) Mount Bonnell (low on list?) Stag (in SoCo) Continental Club Mohawk Austin Bats (assume out of season, but may try?) Neighborhoods SoCo 6th Street Rainy Street I haven't made my brewery list, but I was thinking of going off of the top comment on this thread: https://www.reddit.com/AustinBeecomments/8aacro/which_breweries_in_austin_do_you_recommend/
I copy and pasted every single (with the exception of strip joints…seriously, guys?) comment on my original “Austin Institutions” post, and integrated them as appropriate. Some notes:
I believe not a single place on the list that is open was established after the turn of the 21st century (with the possible exception of Sno Beach, but I have good memories of it growing up :) ). Personal preference, but I feel this mostly disqualifies one as a “Austin Institution” (sorry, Franklin BBQ….)
I believe I Googled up each place to establish open/closed/legitimacy, but if I’m missing something, or something is inaccurate, I’d love to hear it.
I’d also love it if someone took the reins to do like a year-long tour of these places (going to one or more every week for a year, work through the list).
THESE are the places people should frequent, if they want Austin to remain, to be something that is worth moving here for. That’s IMHO, take it or leave it.

I'll be in Austin for a week, and while I did some research using the faq, I know restaurants change, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Most of the posts are at least a couple of years old. The conference provides lunch for most days I'll be there, but I still have a couple of days on my own, and I have to dine everyday. So I did a short list with the places I have found interesting, but I'd like to get your input on this. Mind I won't have access to a car, so most places have to be at walking distance from Downtown. Places I am going for sure, as those look like the best not too expensive option near places I am visiting:
Clay pit
Texas Chili Parlor
Gourdough
Hopdoddy
La barbecue
Casino el camino
Places I have in mind, no particular order:
ALC steaks
Z'Tejas
Hut's hamburgers
Frank restaurant
Burger bar
P. Terry's
Downtown burgers
Easy tiger
Daruma ramen
Jackalope
Via 313 (either East 6th or Rainey)
Las Trancas
Licha's cantina
Takoba
Veracruz
Izzoz tacos
Elizabeth cafe
Bouldin Creek cafe
Tacorrido
Polvo
Threadgill's
Whataburger
Terry Black bbq
Schlotzsky's
Delicious
Ramen Tatsu-ya
Torchy's (either at South Congress or at S 1st)
Juan in a million
Also, I'd like to go places like El Naranjo, but those are a bit too expensive for my taste. Please, feel free to rank the options and offer nearby alternatives. Thank you for your answers!
